  • Ophelia's Lips

Lavinia Branca Snyder New York, NY USA The Image is inspired by the artist's daughter. Her love of the Arctic and the Sea. Digital C-Print on Kodak Paper face mounted to plexiglass. With hand painted frame and hardware. One of a kind piece.

This is a digital world. We are surrounded, engulfed by, and reliant upon digital media. It has become a way of life and a way of seeing. As digitally manipulated images become the norm, their fantasy perspectives are becoming the new reality.  Is there such a thing as truth and lies in digital art photographs, or is it all just possibility?

Our capacities and aptitudes for creating digital photographic art far exceed what we had imagined. We’re tempted by new technologies – camera phones and point and shoots, the next 80megapixel medium format digital back, the newest apps, the latest updates - we cannot help but push the proverbial envelope (shadow/highlight recovery, adjustment brushes, the curves line, layer blending modes).

There is art in successful digital imaging and manipulation. Vincent Dixon, the Wade Brothers, David LaChapelle, the collaborations of Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones, and our Juror, award-winning Photoshop expert Suzette Troche-Stapp are elevating the digitally manipulated photograph to the next level. How do you use it to develop your concepts and achieve your constructs? Whether you are enhancing or altering reality, creating fantasy, retouching, compositing, constructing, how has digital informed your imaging?

Juror's Statement:

What is Digital concept and construction? It’s hard to define in simple terms. Images submitted ran the gamut from clearly filtered and composited to something so subtle you cannot perceive where its pixels have been touched. Where does the art fall in this wide array? Well, the question I ask is “Why was this imaged in the first place, and how does the imaging enhance the story and the viewer’s understanding of what the artist is trying to convey?”

When looking at this exhibit of images I hope you will see fully thought out photographic ideas, where imaging has enhanced the artist’s story. I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful exhibit; my Jurors choice was quite easy. This artist submitted several images and I had a hard time deciding which image I would ultimately choose. Often images and ideas get heavy and bogged down when digital manipulation comes into play, but this artist was singled out because of the delicate use of pixels…The quality of the work was exceptional and deserved to be highlighted as my Jurors Choice.
