Black & white photography is a timeless art; always relevant, always contemporary despite being historically ancient.
Photographer Robert Frank states,
Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.

I wish to thank everyone who entered the “Black and White” competition. I am honoured to have been asked to Juror this event. It was both a joy and a challenge to judge the submissions as there were a number of amazing images which made it very difficult to narrow down the finalists. Every juror has their own unique eye when it comes to viewing submissions. I personally try to keep it simple. I look for the usual things such as lighting, composition, form, curves, lines, technical excellence, etc… However, the most important thing for me is my first impression of the image. How does the image make me feel? Does it convey some kind of emotion or story? These are the same criteria I follow when selecting images from submissions to publish in Adore Noir magazine.
Juror’s Choice: Superhero In Training by: Shannon Wilkinson
The image is remarkable, it clearly evokes a sense of excitement, joy and nostalgia. I was able to connect with the subject immediately, which was largely due to the composition, there was nothing in the image that did not need to be there to get the story across. The mid air shot, the smile on his face, his Flash boots and Captain America shirt are all perfect details that compliment the overall feel of the image. Great work!

2. High Bar by: Denis Sivack
3. The Dark and the Light, Iceland by: Thomas Pickarski
Again, all of the submissions were excellent! And I wish everyone nothing but the best in their future endeavours. Congratulations to all of the finalists.
